A case for Volunteerism

My personal brain injury recovery took a giant leap forward when I began taking my eyes off myself and focusing on helping other people in ways that I could using what I know about recovery. The benefits were clear and the more I work in serving my brain injured brothers and sisters, the more blessings and benefits I receive.

Here are just a few of the many gains and rewards that I have experienced as a result of aspiring to help others:

- Improvements in my speech as I interacted with people

- I was relearning my people skills in a real world setting

- The stamina of my brain was continually challenged and as a result, expanded

- I held myself to a higher standard of accountability because I had to practice what I preached

- I had more quantity of people that I was communicating with thus more practice and growing in emotional intelligence

- There were mental health benefits and a boost in the self esteem department

- And the list goes on ...
