Our view at Brain Injury Recovery 101 is that REST is one of the most vital and often overlooked components of our recovery journey.
Rest is normally thought of as naps or nighttime sleep. This does help the body recover from the day and helps retain the gains made in functionality.
Yet, we believe that other forms of rest can be beneficial as well. These may include mindful breathing and relaxation exercises. Some may choose spiritual activities like meditation or prayer or attending church services. For some, it may be listening to favorite or calming music. Still others may choose to go out in nature, pet a dog or a cat, or watch a favorite tv show.
There are many activities that we may do to rest our bodies, souls, hearts, and more specifically, our brains.
Let’s get intentional about REST and practice daily to reset and refresh ourselves, so we may experience optimal results for our efforts on our Brain Injury Recovery journey!
Having good nutrition is a significant part of our brain injury recovery. We recommend that those recovering from brain injury to consume the best nutrition available to them.
This includes making healthy choices when deciding on your meals and snacks. But also, it includes some form of added supplementation to those meals.
Multivitamins are an easy way to fill nutrient gaps in your diet.
90% of Americans don’t get the recommended daily 10 servings of fruits and vegetables they need.
Balanced nutrition provides vital wellness support, but most people struggle to get the right amount of nutrients through diet alone. Help fill key nutrient gaps with easy and convenient daily supplements.
Adding the right vitamins, minerals, plant nutrients, proteins, and omegas to a healthy, balanced diet and daily routine plays a major role in overall wellness.
Our favorite go-to resource and top choice for nutritional products is Superior-Nutrition.com that provide you with the full variety of products including our top recommendations to help optimize our Brain Injury Recoveries. They also have a 180 day 100% money back guarantee if you don’t absolutely love the products.
We all know that exercise is good for one’s health and well-being after brain injury. The need for physical exercise is very important to help improve our balance, flexibility, strength, improve mobility, improve cardiovascular health, raise lung capacity, and get oxygen to the brain.
All those are very necessary actions to take as your brain reboots and physical activity helps your brain in remembering your previous physical capacities.
These are all very important, especially when you are under the care of physical therapists or occupational therapists. Take much notes. Do your homework.
But something that is often overlooked is to remember to exercise your brain with the same priority as your physical body.
This happens, because persons recovering from brain injury, often focus on the outside physical limitations that they are experiencing and often forget about what cannot be seen, the inside, our brain. Sure, we know the cause, the injury to our brain, but that’s as far as we go.
I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news first: there are ways to exercise your brain that are simple and inexpensive. Basically these exercises are not cost prohibitive.
Now the bad news: they are just as simple to do , as they are simple not to do. That means you’re going to have to build habits around performing these exercises for your brain.
Number one exercise: write your thoughts on paper. If you like to write or journal, great! You are going to love this.
If you don’t like the journal, then find another reason to write your thoughts on paper. If you have a planner or a calendar, buy the paper version which gives you a reason to write and forward tasks on paper.
Now, these two exercises we have found, give you the most bang for your buck and effort, as far as exercise for your brain. You will find that there are many games and brain teasers out there. It’s good to have variety. But as far as impact goes, these two are some of the best brain exercises.
